Hi Everyone,
Some time earlier this year there was some discussion about
rebuilding the main gear struts on the coupes.
I'm not sure who all was involved in the actual rebuilding of some
at that time but I think it was in the western Washington area. Perhaps
Ron or Paul or Andy???
One of them had done it before and they were going to get a small
group together who needed theirs rebuilt and they were going to do them
all together one afternoon.
Here's my situation.....I'm doing an annual on my 415C and yesterday
I raised my main gear up and removed the shocks. I have them here at
home and am about to order some donuts, o-rings and ??? for them this
morning. I haven't taken them apart yet but at first glance yesterday
when I removed them it looks like it's going to be pretty difficult to
get the 'retaining clip' out of the top (inside a housing with holes to
peak through) without destoying it. Then how would the new one be
installed back in the 'slot' by going through this small hole in the
side of the housing?
If anyone on here knows the proper procedure, or whoever it was that
said it was "quite easy once you know how" would contact me ASAP so I
can oreder all the parts I need at the same time I would appriciate it
very much.
I'll have to make another trip out to the airport to get my
maintenance and parts manuals as it was so late when I left last night
that I forgot to bring them home with me.
Also, there is a 'slight' amount of slack detedtble in the 'knee
joint' on one side (the other side is fine) so I think I'll replace the
knee joint bushings as well while I have it all apart.(There ws also
some discussion a while back about someone being sent the bakelight
bushings and the center hole was to small and had to be either rturned
or reamed out. I assume those were the ones in the knee joint that I'm
talking about. What was the final word on that and who was it that sent
the bad bushings. I'm going to compare prices between Univair and
Skyport and see where to order them from. On some things one is cheaper
and other times the other place is cheaper. Just depends on what the
part is that I need, I try to order from both places (as well as a few
others) to stay in good with everyone.
The tail has been pretty low for several years but I'm used to it
and the handling charactersistics so it was no big deal (still handles
better than most anything else I've ever flown) but since the wings are
off right now and it's easy to get to the top bolts of the shocks I
thought I might as well do the 'tail-up' thing at this time.
As usual, any tips, comments, criticisms or smart a-- remarks are
always welcomed.
Thanks,
Bob Saville
