Patrick,

I thought his comments were interesting, but I doubt his inference of
power
failures, and icing problems.

We have seen problems with mechanics not properly tightening the fuel pump
cover after an annual; and have a pump failure; because of sucking air
instead of fuel.... But if you are observent, you immediately see the
fuselage tank gauge dropping....and find a place to land and refuel the
fuselage tank......and properly tighten the cover bolt - or replace a
failed
fuel pump.

I have never experienced ( in almost 20 years of Coupe ownership) a power
failure in my C-85.

However, when a carb needle valve is replaced with the Delrin plastic tip,
then a weight must be added to the carb float....and if done improperly
the
weight may rub the carb body and stick, causing problems.... ( applies to
all
engines and airplanes using the Continental Engine and Carb....not just
Ercoupes); and not draining water from the tanks and gascolater of course
causes problems......

I don't buy the Funnell Effect he discusses, as the Carburetter mixture is
determined by the density of the air allowed into the float
chamber.....BUT
if the mixture control passages are clogged, then this may happen......
(After cleaning the air filter, it must be properly oiled to trap dirt
particles, or the mixture control will almost immediately clog..)...
Proper
maintanance ??? applies to all Continental & Lycoming, Franklin, and other
Engines - on all airplanes.

You should never have to add fuel to the fuselage tank, as the pump should
keep it full. If you have to do so, check out the drain back pipe...May
be
broken off, etc...; and if the fuselage tank overflows, then the drain
back
line must be clogged, or the restrictor in the fuel pump has been left
out....( the outlet fitting on the fuel pump is restricted to only allow a
flow of about 7 gal /hr flow.)

Weick designed a very safe system, after considerable study on aircraft
engine failures....finding the gravity feed system to be the most reliable
and safest. I believe that.
