I have the single fork nose gear and there are some inherent problems with
it. The double fork alleviates the problems that exist with the single
fork. The single fork looks like the letter C when you look at it head
on.
Only one "tine" is hooked to one side of the wheel, where a double fork
has two tines hooked on both sides of the wheel, like the top half of a
letter H or a U. This is a much more stable structure. The single fork
has a bearing that tends to loosen up to a point where the nose gear wheel
"wobbles." Tightening the bearing does nothing to stop the wobble since
it
isn't an angled bearing like most wheels have. Basically, a single fork
wasn't the greatest design. The conversion from single to double is in
the
$1200 to $1500 price range using parts from Skyport services depending on
the serial number of the aircraft. Like I said, I have the single fork
and the biggest problem I have with it is uneven tire wear due to the
wobble. I've heard that some single fork wheels do work well.
Unfortunately, mine isn't one of them!

I'm trying to buy an Ercoupe. I like the way they look and they seem to
be a safe and fun plane. During my research, I run accross the term
"double fork nose gear". Could someone tell me what this is? And why it
is better or worse to have it?
