Corrosion is a fickle thing. Some planes seem to go forever with little
or no corrosion, and others have been junked years ago with runaway
cancer. A dry climate or storage is best. A plane that sits over wet
grass or in a wet area or around salt water for very long, soon gets the
telltale white powder on bare aluminium parts. There are several types
of anti-corrosion treatments. Some are a spray-in type of oil. These
shold be repeated every few years. Cleaning and painting with zinc
chromate works very well to keep things corrosion free.

The cost depends on how extensive the treatment and who does it. You
can do it yourself with a pressure sprayer and something like LPS-3
anti-corrosion oil.

You must remember that most Ercoupes are in the fifty-five year old
range, older than many of the owners. Ercoupes are most likely no more
prone to corrosion than other vintage planes. Still, the ugly spectre
of corrosion can be there and it's very important to keep it under
control. In steep turns or turbulent air, the questions of the plane
rotting away can become an unsettling thing on the mind. These planes
are fun and tough, but must be checked over once in a while. Then you
can go out and play fighter pilot with confidence.
