My 1946 415-C coupe is getting a good going over right now. I removed
the wings and the wing tanks and had a good look at the main centre
spar. Fortunately there was no corrosion. I cleaned and zinc chromated
everything and used a good sealer on the tank. I also checked the rear
spar and it was in good shape. My plane has a rear spar inspection
plate which is part of the wing fillet. I've not seen any others like
it, but it looks factory.

Now on real wing spar corrosion. I saw a coupe with the wings off and
about six or eight inches in from the end you could break away the main
spar like a cold chocolate bar. End of plane.

Another beautiful polished coupe I had looked at to buy, but fortunately
didn't, had the same problem. The new owner found out after getting the
plane home. They took out the rivets and took the plane in half, and
found a good used spar and put it in. The whole job cost as much as the
plane, or close to it.

If these planes have no corrosion, they're very tough little planes.
With hidden corrosion they can become a serious game of safety and
spending money. To remove the wings and see the spar, only takes an
hour or so for both wings. It's worth it.
