I see the mention of my coupe being on the Canadian Owner Maintenance
has stirred a few souls. I feel it is one of the few good things our
government has done in recent years. Yes, there will be some people
who
will feel it's their licence to fly their plane until it comes to
pieces, but they will definitely be in the minority.

The plane can still be inspected or worked on by an aircraft mechanic,
but the owner signs off his work, thus relieving the mechanic of any
unseen problems caused by the owner. This, as some have said, is no
different that the homebuilt scene. Many, even on this site, feel
that
anything that is not factory stock may be dangerous and should never
be
attempted. I feel this is quite wrong as long as some experience and
common sense are close at hand.

These planes are very simple machines. Every time we fly we take a
chance that things can go wrong. Anyone who has had much to do with
machinery learns that the best new machine available can let you down.

Machines of any kind are fallible. We must do the best we can to keep
things running smoothly. Some don't have the needed skill and some
do.
As adults we must be able to make that choice for ourselves and live
or
die by our decisions. Some experimenting and modification should be
able to take place without big brother glaring over our shoulder. No
one wants to be reckless, but I'd sooner have some fun and die in my
coupe than a Ford Explorer blowing its tires on a six lane at cruise
speed. We sometimes must stop being over-concerned about our precious
skin and have some fun and take responsiblity for ourselves.

I found at least six things in my current inspection by my self that
several other "qualified" mechanics failed to see. There are some
good
AME's out there, but there are many expensive really bad ones. The
coupes we fly are less complex that a top-of-the-line Honda ride-on
mower. I know, I've worked on both as small engine repair is my line
of
work and I have restored three coupes.

I just feel it's time to take some of the "mystery" out of it all, and
get people's brains back to thinking. This ought to stir up you
purists.
