If by "decal" you mean a relatively large imprinted plastic sheet with a contact adhesive on it, one thing to know is that at that at the time you wish to apply it, you should have a spray bottle of water with a small amount of soap in it. Spray both the surface of the target and the adhesive side of the appliqui and apply it while wet. This prevents the immediate adhesion of the appliqui so you can squeegee the bubbles and folds out of it, and move it around if needed. The water eventually osmosis out and the adhesive then bonds to the surface. This is also the way to apply window tint plastic to windows.
