Converting from a C to D or above should be approved without the stainless panel." The stainless panel is a very important part of the fire safety provisions to prevent an engine compartment fire from involving the cabin fuel tank. It is a wonder that the FAA has not mandated it for all Ercoupes through an AD. All owners of Ercoupes that have not had this stainless panel installed should just as a safety issue even if they do not wish to move to the "D" configuration. It is not that hard to do and it will not cost big dollars to have it done. It is the kind of thing that would lend its self to a regional improvement weekend where members with the skills and tools would find a place to work and do several Coupes over one weekend in a small production line. The only risk would be the other issues they would find while they did the project at hand. The Northwest would seem like a good place to give it a try as there is a good density of Coupes and the active people to do the work. Hello Paul and Percy!!
