The procedure is for you to work with an experienced CFI to learn the correct method for hand-propping and aircraft engine. I'm not being a smart alec or facetious here. That is what you should do. That said, be aware that the Coupe sits at a different angle than the J3 or Aeronca you're apt to learn on, and you have to do something a bit different depending on your height, to avoid having the other blade come around and whack you. >2. The master switch activates the solenoid, what else does it control. It's really not so much a solenoid but a 'master relay.' That's really all it does is turn the positive pole from the battery off and on, so that the full amperage doesn't have to run through that little tiny switch. >3. Can I by-pass the solenoid altogether to start the engine, if so what >is the procedure? The master switch does not have to be on (or the master relay activated) in order to start the engine. However, you don't get power to the starter without this being the case. If the magnetos are on, the engine will start in the presence of a proper fuel mixture. >4.I have a pull type starter....how does it actually work? Very well :-) When you pull the cable, it connects the starter gear in the accessory case to the starter motor via a clutch. At the extreme of the pull it engages a switch which sends power to the starter motor. It is important that the switch not close until the clutch is fully engaged. The 'safer' arrangement here requires more cable travel and a harder pull before the switch closes. >5. My Coupe has a generator and the electricals require above idle RPM >to activate them, does this include the radio? They will run on the battery at idle, but below around 1200RPM you aren't getting much charge, so you are deficit spending in terms of power. If you have a landing light it is probably the biggest power hog, and will start going dim after a prolonged period of idling. Indeed, many Ercoupes with small generators cannot keep up with two landing light and everything else even at cruise, and will be depleting their batteries if they are running radios, running lights, and two 100-watt landing lights at once. One thing you should verify is that with the generator switched on and just after starting that there is a positive rate of charge on the ammeter. Do this each time you fly.
