The service manual on page 27 states that the elevator cables should be
tensioned to 160 to 190 pounds as measured with a tensionmeter. I thought
that it was too high, also, but when I used the proper tensionmeter for
that size cable, the 160 to 190 fell smack in the center of the scale on
the tensionmeter. That made feel better about making them that tight,
then latter in this forum, those numbers were deemed correct. That's
where mine are, and it's working great.

Page 26 tells you to tension the rudder cables 60 to 70 pounds. I'm sure
that the book is right. I'd follow it if I were you.

At risk of starting a riot, can I revisit this thorney subject. As a
newcomer to the Ercoupe world, my engineer asked that dreadful question of
"what should the tension be on the elevator and rudder cables. 160 seems
too high" Research on this page, which was very useful suggests that it
was never resolved. Does anyone know if Jim Read resolved it? Sadly it is
keeping a wonderful aircraft grounded at the moment and any help would be
appreciated.
