My primer is supposedly a Lunkenheimer product. It has two 1/2" x 1/16" O-rings at the 'business' end. They sit in grooves on the plunger. These turned out to be hardware-store items. Down at the panel end, there is a classic packing-nut. It had old-fashioned wax-and-cotton packing up there (the kind you'd use on the valve under the bathroom sink). I replaced it with modern Teflon packing (the kind you'd use under today's bathroom sink). Works very smoothly. It wouldn't if you crammed an O-ring in there. The O-ring would bind up the shaft. Now, there really isn't supposed to be much, if any, fuel at the packing (panel) end of the primer because the O-rings down at the far end of the piston are pretty much supposed to contain it and wipe it. Does this sound familiar? Are there two grooves (maybe filled with what looks like to pieces of styrene, which are actually hardened O-rings) down at the end where the pointy bit is? If so, replace them! After you do, slap some grease on the O-rings before you cram the piston back in. After that, the gas will lube it.
