I'd also bet that they weren't making their students lean the engine,
particularly at idle. You really do need to taxi with the engine
lean, but you then have to remember to richen up before you take
off again.

If you taxi with it so lean that if you add power it dies, then you'll
remember :-)

I think you can COUNT ON the flight school telling the students to leave
it
full rich at all times. Both schools I saw were somewhat reluctant to
admit
that mixture knob COULD be pulled.

About how much does this cost? I assume you fly the plane to them and
then
they sign off your book when it's completed?

There is a relatively new technology out that a number of A&P's are
adopting. They just call it 'Dynamic Prop Balancing.' They balance
your prop on your engine throughout the power-band, using a computer
that detects every little nuance of vibration in the whole powerplant.
They also claim that they can detect things like sticky valves or
soft cylinders in the process.

They guys around here who've had it done rave about the results.

In reference to Grant's posting... what do you all know about the "proper"
location of the prop relative to the firing order? I have heard
everything
under the sun about how to clock the prop, it seems to be one of those
longstanding hangar arguments. Is there any definitive info from the
manufacture, etc?

I've been using it for approximately 4 years. Without it, the plugs
were full of "lead balls" at 25-50 hour intervals. Now, they stay
clean.

Hi Bill, the mounts are available from Lee at Skyport 800 624 5312 ext
207,
that's where I bought mine, great prices and good service. I am sure he
can
help you with the seat belts too.Pete

Just got word that N99790 will not pass the current annual without
harness/seatbelt set that has the STC label on it. Anybody have
a Coupe with harness/seatbelts that is being parted out? Or, does
anyone have a good source for reasonably-priced seatelts?

Also, the rubber grommets on the motor mounts are crumbling. Is there
a good source for these items? My co-owner and I are doing an
owner-assist
annual and the mechanic has pointed these items out. The seatbelts in our
craft are obviously made for aviation use, they just don't have that label
on them.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think you mean PMA label, right? Wag-Aero sells PAM'd seatbelts with a
variety of attachment schemes. Or, any suitable belt from an aircraft
wrecking yard would do.

Do you have the old style Continental conical mounts? How old are they?
I've seen new ones "Crumble" in a matter of months. It's more cosmetic
than
functional. You can get them from any of the usual suspects, Chief, ACS,
etc. If you have the C90-14/16 or O200 style (Lord mount) they're a
little
more expensive, but readily available too.

Joa,sometimes they come to you because the equip. is small enough to
carry around and uses batt..The cost in Ct. is around 100-150
dollars. They used to put the wts. behind the spinner but I have heard
that the had to change to a diff. sys. in the last couple years. They
might use some type of adhesive now not sure.Try to pick a day when you
have no wind or are able to put the plane behind a hanger or trees to
block the wind. This mach. is that sensitive. It will take a while to do
unless you are lucky but count on at least an hour.Make sure your batt.
is fully charged because you will do a lot of starting and stopping. We
always get mine down to .02 whatever that means. They tell me that if you
can get it that low and keep it there during a few more tests, your eng.
and prop are in good shape.Jim in Ct.

John,

When I first got my Coupe the belts were in poor shape. I had the
existing
hardware re-webbed by http://www.aircraftbelts.com in Texas. I paid
$55.00
to re-web both seat belts in Sept 1991. I suspect it is a bit more now
<g>
but it is likely to be much lower than new belts and the result looked
great. You may want to give them a call.

Note that new hardware has a TSO tag on it not an STC - is that really
what
your mechanic wanted? Is he refering to shoulder harnesses? Seat belts
are
TSO'ed since 1987 so there was no requirement for TSO'ed belts in the
Ercoupe. You may want to make sure you and your mechanic understand what
is
required by the type certificate. Take a look at their FAQ at
http://www.aircraftbelts.com/faqs.html

They can also supply new TSO'ed belts.

The weights are bolted to the spinner bulkhead using glue or adhesive
weights like on car wheels are prohibited. Wind has no effect on the
balancing unless it is really blowing hard enought to bow your blades then
I
wouln't be out there. It usually takes 11/2 to 2 hours three or 4 runs
usually. The equipment is small but expensive my Chadwick cost $7500.00.
You
get it below .2 IPS (inches per second) this is the velocity that it is
measured in with a pickup on the engine. 90% of the over 200 aircraft that
I
have balanced need it! People are some times reluctuant to spend the $125
that I charge but they would spend $50 for a tire and think nothing of
paying $7.50 to balance it, you don't see any tread wearing but everthing
on
the aircraft is worn or cracked by the vibration.Jim N87349 A&P
