My My, I haven't seen a "Rant" like this since it was "Rumored" that
everyone was going to have to cut holes in the bellies of their beloved
Coupes or ground them. But most folks did a little investigation and found
out the truth. Now Mr. Partain, ( who is apparently very interested and
concerned as well as knowledgeable in aircraft Maint), makes a comment
that
is indeed "Justified". Now you say, and I quote, " That is all. You don't
know who is an A&P or who is working under close supervision of an A&P
and
or IA, under which an owner can do ANYTHING", and I agree. However, can
"YOU" guarantee that everyone reading this list is going to seek out an
A&P
to supervise the work ? I dare say not, I to am an A&P and I can attest to
the fact that several people bye a plane and it has "All the logs up to
date", however, the first annual by a "Competent" A&P finds a gig list 2
pages long, totally out of date equipment lists and so many "Illegal and
Unsafe" owner fixes that the "Bargain is no longer a Bargain".

I can see where Mr. Partain is very justified in his concern, he is
teaching
the next generation of A&P's and it is part of his job that they learn to
follow the letter of the law as well as make competent decisions about
their
ability. How many of them, or other potential A&Ps could be reading this
list ? Can you imagine what they must think about your "Attack" on Mr..
Partain ? And it is an Attack. Now can you also see a coupe owner that
doesn't understand the concept of proper fasteners and torque values ?
When
the plane falls out of the sky the FAA not only looks at it but places a
glance at all of us. All it takes is one hard headed and stubborn "Fool"
to
cause a great amount of grief for all of us.

If I were you, and of course I am not, I would reconsider the comments
made
to Mr. Partain and consider that he may have far more to offer with his
knowledge and position. A competent and understanding A&P will work with
owners that also show some form of ability and are able to follow
direction
to the letter. Then again, I know of a couple of owners that "Brag" about
doing their own work and believe me it shows, Bolts from Ace Hardware,
sheet
metal screws instead of rivets and the list goes on.

No one knows everything, but those that have an extensive knowledge also
know that is something doesn't seam right that it deserves investigation.
To
top it off they know where to look to find the answer. I consider Mr.
Partain's comments not only justified, I believe that having him removed
because he may have stepped on "Your" toes would not only be an injustice,
it could also be perceived as "Censorship". Think about it before you
start
spouting off, remember, the list is watching, and you don't want to make
yourself look that bad in public by possibly condoning un-authorized and
illegal maintenance.

You've 'seen' nothing 'being performed...,' David.

You've read some discussions.

That is all. You don't know who is an A&P or who is working under close
supervision
of an A&P and or IA, under which an owner can do ANYTHING.

Please don't presume or assume. And for god's sake, don't act on those
assumptions or presumptions.

I don't care if you teach aeronautics at MIT, it doesn't qualify you to
presume to
know under what circumstances the work being performed is being performed.

Nor does it qualify to comment on other people's business.

For your information, MOST of the work that was done on the Ercoupe that
took
home most of the hardware at the EOC convention this year was performed by
its
loving owner, under the supervision of the two BEST Ercoupe A&P/IAs who
ever walked the earth. And it was ALL perfectly legal.

>Enough preaching,

More than enough.

>the choice is yours.

Right. The choice of how we (within the law) maintain our aircraft *is*
ours.

Assembling a great long 'dossier' of 'violations' you've 'seen' is not
going to
endear you to the group.

Nor does a single member of the group have to defend his or her actions
to YOU.

So, David: are you here to learn and contribute, or to give people grief
and
make them think that someone is out to cause them (uncalled-for) trouble?

Decide now. If it's the latter, then maybe we should just ask Tom to
unsubscribe
you.
