Alan. To get 85 hp out af a 75 hp continental one has to change the carburetor jetting, that's it. That way , the engine runs faster and develops 10 more horses. Seems your upgrade was done correctly. Your max. gross weight is now 1400 # - That's why the conversion to a D. The only downside of a D-model conversion is the restriction of the elevator to keep the no stall characteristics. Adding the split elevator fixes this disadvantage, giving you back the elevator authority and enabling you to land at slower speeds again. The stall speed for a 1400 # gross weight Ercoupe is always the same - 54 MPH at full gross. But with a split elevator one could actually land at the recommended speed of stall speed times 1.3 = 70.2. and still flare the plane. The split of the elevator is by the way only to avoid unintentional power on stalls - it does not change the power off behavior, which is more a factor of the load of the machine. see the articles Http://www.ercoupers.com - also check the 337 section.
