Harry; You are correct. It only takes a letter from the local FSDO to Univair to have a new data plate issued. I did that with N86997, when I thought that I had lost the data plate. My maintenance inspector filled out the request after I showed him the records I had on the Coupe, and I got a new data plate from Univair in about 2 weeks. As I recall, it cost me $25 for Univair to make the plate.
