In Oregon we don't fill our own cars or cans.  The service station
attendant (pump jockey) does it for
you.  This is a state law. (I guess the politicians here think we're to
stupid to operate the pumps.)
    When I have cans (platic or metal) to fill I remove them from the
trunk of the car or the back of
the truck and sit them on the ground while he (or she) is filling the tank
on my vehicle. Then I put
them back in my vehicle myself so it gets positioned and secured the way I
want them.
