If you have travelled anywhere around Latin America, you may have noticed
that driving in the city exposes you to a lot of ineresting things. Every
traffic light will provide you with endless displays of jugglers, fire
eaters, clowns, windshield washers and vendors selling everything from
popcorn, beer and pork rinds to cell phone accessories, fuzzy dice and
many
of those other wonderful things that auto manufacturers never thought of
as
standard equipment.
One of these is the "colita rutera". A strip of plastic that you attach to

your rear bumper and it drags along the ground and is claimed to discharge

static electricity and reduce the stress of the driver, improve his sex
life
and eliminate the risk of explosion when refuelling with the engine
running.
(Standard practice outside the US.) Of course, if you have a "colita
rutera"
turning off your engine is the least of your concerns, you are
concentrating
on the other benefits of this device.
I have no idea if it works as static discharge, but I guess it could.. (
You
will have to ask the wife about the other one she sewed onto my pajamas..)

I have never seen a static discharge on the undercarriage of a plane. They

have them on the wingtips though. I have been told many years ago that
aircraft tires are made out a conductive synthetic rubber that discharges
static on landing.
Anybody tried flowing an electrical current through an old tire to see if
it
is true?
