Steven:

Cold weather is when the electrical system shows its
problems. Battery replacement is a "preventative
maintenance item" which pilots are permitted to perform
themselves. You should log the replacement in the aircraft
logbook. If you can troubleshoot your auto's electric
system, you can do the same for the plane. If you take your
auto to a garage, then take the plane to a mechanic.

Regarding batteries:

I'm only familiar with the Alon, but basically, you look at
the physical size of the battery and purchase the highest
capacity battery in that size. The only two sizes of 12
volt batteries are 18AH and 25AH (sizes 25 and 35) - you
will undoubtedly need the small one.

but there is more...

It is very important that the battery compartment be kept
clean, because aluminum corrodes really fast from acid
fumes. Because of this aircraft battery compartments in
current designs are now totally enclosed, usually made from
plastic, and are always vented to the outside. The Alon
compartment is not sealed and appears to be set up for what
is called a "manifolded battery." What this is is a battery
with a sealed top which has its own built-in overflow drain
vent system.

++ The manifolded battery is the most expensive type and
not available everywhere.
++ The standard battery (like an auto battery, except with
non-spill caps) is what most people use, but is probably not
the correct type for a 'coupe.
++ Totally sealed gell-cell batteries are available, but as
an engineer, I'll tell you that they just don't have the
poop or life of other types. I believe they are slightly
lower capacity for the same case size.
++ A company called "Concorde" makes a type of battery
called "Recombinant Gas" which is totally maintenance free
and sealed, so no venting is required. It costs
approximately $20 more than plain vanilla.

I opted for the Concorde when I replaced mine earlier this
year. There is a catch: according to the I/A I work with,
the battery is a listed piece of equipment on the aircraft's
type certificate, so the replacement must either be from
that list, or must be STC'ed. The Concorde isn't STC'ed for
'coupes yet, but I won't tell anyone.

but there is more...

Be sure you need a new battery. Go through the same
electrical checks you would make on your auto. Check
electrical connections and the battery's specific gravity
before tossing the old one out.

Battery cost: $75 to $110, depending on where you purchase.
