It's just that students usually have the idea that the spin is a terrible experience, and have it in the back of their mind during the training and it might make them hesitant to try certain things. If I take a student up and have them do spins, they might not like them but they become more confident because they know how they start and how to stop them.
BTW I haven't seen any hoopla about doing/not doing spins. I do them, but as I've said it isn't necessary. I haven't noticed any of the hotheaded for or against arguments that the newsgroups sometimes have. I think everyone here agrees that they're optional, right? --Steve Dold
