Syd & group, You will find this interesting:
In " From the Ground Up", Page 248, Fred Weick talks about the shoulder harness and the need for such safety equipment.---------" In particular I discussed possible improvements in cockpit design for protection in crashes and told about a simple shoulder harness arrangement that I had worked out and was using in my own Ercoupe. (This harness was then available as optional equipment for the Ercoupes produced by Saunders)." And from "The Ercoupe, A Touch of Class", page 257, Saunders Aviation Accessories Price List, dated October 1, 1949: Airplane: Buble Windshield kit SK-15 $88.88 - - - Shoulder Harness Kit SK- 3 $25.00 Somewhere else, I think I read the Ercoupe was the first civilian airplane offering shoulder harness, as an option. Also, on Page 249, of "From the Ground Up", Fred discusses the logic for the fuel system he used, and the statistical data showing that the major reason for crashed was failure of the fuel system, or out of fuel. On page 250 he states that AOPA endorsed his call for elimination of fuel valves in the cockpit in all airplanes- as the improper use of fuel valves was a major operational problem....
