Check the AOPA online under the members section. There are a lot of
nice radios (used) there for sale. Also, look through some of the
Aviation magazines and place a phone call or two to some of the Avionics
shops. I found a Michaels MX-11 with tray and installation harness for
$625 from Pacific Coast Avionics. The radio was yellow tagged and
carried a warranty (This is a good choice for a com only radio. It has
8 watts transmit power and 10 channel memory flip-flop. It is very
slender, fitting under the dash with very little space taken up.) I
found lots of good buys, most of them yellow tagged and ready to go.
There are a lot of com/GPS radios used on the market now, as people
upgrade to IFR certified recievers. Most can be had for less than half
the purchase price of new. If you purchase a radio from an individual,
though, be aware that any warranty promise given by the individual is
probably close to worthless, unless thae person can fix the radio
themselves. The Avionics shops are the safest bet for a good used
reliable radio. Or spend the big bucks for new. It's your money.
