IIMorrow (Apollo) has some very nice nav/gps combinations. I would
strongly suggest GPS over NAV for a VFR airplane. GPS is more accurate,
does not require knowing any VOR frequencies and comes with better
databases. VOR's are not likely to be around forever either.

I have a Narco 810 Com and an Apollo 2001 NMS Loran in my 'Coupe along
with a King KT76 transponder. If I were to put new radios in today I
would put in a combined COM/GPS. The nicest one I have seen (except for
the very $$$ Garmin 430) is the IIMorrow GX65
(http://www.iimorrow.com/gx65des.htm) but it may be beyond your budget
at $4000. King also has a combined GPS/COM but I do not like LCD
displays all that much.

If I had only a little to spend, I would put in a slimine COM
like the Apollo SL40 or the Narco 820 or the King or ICOM (all about
$1200 to $1500) and a handheld GPS like the Lowrance 100 (about $595).

I really see no need for VOR in a VFR airplane.

I'm looking at an Alon that is going to need the radios
replaced. I'd
like to hear some transponder and a nav/com suggestions.

        Thanks.
