Well, Pete,
How I got the Communications Specialist radio is kinda a fluke. I
didn't know if my head set was working after I bought 29H, so I took
it to the local radio installer. He does CB, Ham, etc. I figured he
could check it out.
When I cane back the next day, he said it was OK and asked my what
it was for. I said "airplane," and he said "I got a hand held that I
should get rid of."
"How much?" and the deal was done. Seems the guy had used it with
his Baron, but he wasn't flying any more. I believe he is still in
business in Roswell, NM.
Now, when I flew back from EAA Arlington `98, I stopped at Shelton.
The FBO operator and I struck up a conversation - Flight Service was
calling him looking for me while I was on hold ("Please wait for the
next available operator") waiting to talk to the FSS! Seems that his
company has some CSIs' in a warehouse that they used in the woods.
I guess they went to some other freq. band to get around line-of-site
operation. Bottom line - any `coupers in the Shelton, Washington,
area could maybe bird dog this out. They might be willing to part
with some/all of those radios at a real good price.
BTW, the company still supports the radio. I had to get the battery
rebuilt this year. $45 and back in business. New radio is $495.
