I have more confidence with PMA parts, at least in critical things like 
magneto drive gears.  How would I know that drive gears from, say, 
Fresno Airparts (for example) are suitable if they carry no PMA?  Fresno 
Airparts and magneto drive gears only used as examples in this case :-(

And to lose a tooth and screw up your engine!  

I'm not sure what you're getting at.  Are you saying that we should do 
independent testing of critical parts before installing them on out
planes?  
Or are you suggesting that we get organized and try to bring about change 
in the FAA's PMA system?

Personally, I would rather have a system where an inspector is able to 
use his own common sense and judgement in making a decision as to 
whether or not a modification is airworthy, rather than a broad set of
standards that will end up making ownership even more restrictive.
