Coupers
Here I am as promised. Just got back from the airport. I said I
would let
everyone know what was inside the elevator. It took two guys to remove the
elevator so that it could be moved around to make the loose part rattle.
Sure enough something bounced around in there. There is a small opening
under the elevator where a plate is held in place with 4 screws. The plate
is used to anchor the spiraled trim wire cover. After that plate was
removed it took a lot of wiggling and jiggling to get the "thing" to
finally fall out the opening. Too much suspense? I better tell you what it
was.
The trim tab control wire is attached to the trim tab horn using a
swivel
fitting. Part of that fitting is an aluminum dished washer that crimps the
trim wire so that it can't slide in the fitting. That's what it was. From
the looks of it, it had been in the elevator for a long time and I can't
imagine how it ever got there.
As it turns out I could have flown it that way forever, but not
knowing
what it was I couldn't take that chance. Needless to say I immediately
went
flying to relieve a bad case of withdrawal from being grounded. I want to
thank all of you that tried to help.
