Hi Coopers
Yesterday while I was pre flighting my Mod.415 D (Does not have a
split
elevator), as I raised the elevator to check the hinges and linkage I
heard
something roll forward inside the elevator. It was not something very
small
and made a sound like a nut with flats because it went: klunk, klunk,
klunk
as it rolled. I can't make it happen every time, possibly because it gets
lodged somewhere inside.
I don't have any sketches or drawings that show the inner
structure of the
elevator, so I'm wondering if any of you have any idea what could possibly
be loose inside it. I can fly safely without my rudders but flying without
an elevator is impossible and is suicidal.
My mechanic says he will have to remove the elevator to be sure
where the
object is and then will have to open it to remove the object and do a
repair, if necessary. The only openings in the elevator are a slot where
the control horn sticks out and a very small opening where the trim tab
cable goes into the front and another where it comes out of the bottom
surface. The object sounds much too large to have ever entered through
those openings. I also doubt that inspection cover openings are allowed in
control surfaces.
Until I know what is loose I'm not eager to fly it. Sure would
appreciate
any and all thoughts and suggestions you Coopers might have. Right now I'm
grounded until the mechanic can get to it.Jack G.(U42)UTAH N103JF, SN:745
