Hi Gang,
I think on this gascolator AD you're all saying the same thing but
with
different wording.
On my 415C, there are two "Rods" coming from above that meet at
the
gascolator, forming a "Vee" and then there is a single loop type clamp
that encircles the gascolator inlet fitting. This supports it (as a
solid unit) as part of the engine so that they vibrate together as one
unit.
I think where the confusion lies is that some of you are saying
"rods"
and some of you are saying "brackets" for the two round pieces that form
the "Vee" and actually act as a mounting spot for the small bracket that
stabilizes the gascolator. (At least, that's my 2 cents worth. Hope
I've cleared it up instead of making it even more confusing.)
ALSO, don't forget the rest of the "fix", (46-38-03, was a
"mandatory"
note 7 of AD-718-6) if you still have the old elbow (Brass I think) part
number AN914-2d that goes between the gascolator and the carburetor it
is supposed to be removed and replaced with AN914-2 (steel I think). I
had the old one and it had a slight "seep" in it so I tried to tighten
it one day and as I wiggled it, it came apart in my hand. It was
cracked part way through and the weight of the gascolator (on the ground
and not vibrating) only allowed a little dampness to be noticed, who
knows how much may have been "spraying" out right in front of the
exhaust manifold during flight????? I'm very glad that I discovered it
when I did!!!! The first thing I do when I start my "pre-flight" check
is to turn on the main fuel valve on the instrument panel so that I have
fuel pressure (gravity weight) on the entire system.
I just found another (later date) one that says to "visually
inspect
the fuel line nipple located between the gascolator and the carburetor
for cracks, incorrect alignment or over torque and prior to further
flight replace as necessary, the nipple from a AN911-2D (aluminum) to a
AN911-02 (brass or steel) fitting as described in Univair Aircraft
Corporation, Ercoupe Bulletin No. 24A dated August 22, 1986."
(Evidently there was another one between these two that I haven't seen.)
I can't locate the one requiring the installation of the two rods
and
bracket to reduce the vibration that creates the potential problem.
I found the above information in the UNIVAIR "ESS" pamphlet that I
recently ordered from the Univair catalog. I haven't had time to read it
all yet so I may have just missed the other one while I was scanning
through it just now.
I'm trying to get caught up enough so I can leave early next week
for
the Air Races in Reno, so I'd better get off of here for now. I hope
this has been of some help instead of just making things more confusing
for everyone.
If anyone else out there is planning on going to the Races, Let's
wear
something that says "Ercoupe" on it (such as a cap) and we can meet at
the bulletin board in front of "Race-Control Headquarters" every day at
NOON (right after the welcoming ceremony) and see some of the faces that
go with the names on this list. Okay??? (Alternate time at 8:00am just
before things get started at 8:20)
I hope to see some of you there.
