The original Factory handbook that came with my Continental C-75/C-85
(it has the specs for both engines in the same book) show that the
engine should use one quart every 5 hours. That is about what I get.
Ercoupe has a mod for the engine vent tube, as most of the oil lost is
going out the engine crankcase vent tube. The original tube goes
forwaed and then down, the new tube goes up, then back, than down. This
is supposed to keep the oil vapors from condensing and running down the
tube into the cowling. Instead, they drain back into the crankcase.
This is said in the SB to decrease oil loss to about 1 quart in 6.5
hours. It sounds like a large portion of the oil loss on these engines
is simply due to oil vapor loss through the venting tube.
