Dave, When 99893 was bought back in 1989, a 415-C, the plane was really rough it was half stripped of paint and on its way to be polished out. the radio in it was a antique by today standards. the inside was really a mess. but there was no corrosion. Price 4,200.00, after a lot of money and a new 0-200 engine we really did have a good looking plane but with all the work and money had just about 15,000.00 invested. The O-200 engine was its down fall, when the quick drain came out of the gasalator while in flight the landing spot was a freshly rowed lettuce field and 99893 was on her back at touch down. we owned her about 2 years. (She was Insured)
One month later(June of 91) we purchased 6596Q from a airport in Santa Monica,Ca. had been setting for 14 years by the ocean. all log books were current, we took a mechanic with us and did a prefight inspection and all tests said ok. the paint was down to primer, interior was not pretty except seats. she had a current anual. no corrosion. Every thing worked on the ground, since it had no mode C ,we bought her out as a pair using the Mode C from the plane we had flowen down in. When she airborne, the radio quit working, the compus was going around and around and we found out the portable radio had a busted antenna jack from the crash of 99893. I found the portable antenna, and we really flew her home by the seat of our pants. Price for this alon 14,000.00 in 91. her time frame was 700 hrs. had 4 hours on tack from anual more than likely all on the ground. Upon, the next anual, our mechanic, called and said "we have a problem"?? seems the good ole boy who had this plane for over 14 years had some form of problem not in log books, it had a no,no repair. the left aleron, was full of bondo, where the rivets had been put back in, they had missed the ribing it was suppose to connect too and what a mess that could of been. We had gave 99893 away to the Plane for Russia project, and the hunt was own for a left aleron that cost us 900.00, after a paint job, all the radios changed and a lot more electronics added, interior redone and all the motor work done 2 years ago our 14,000.00 bird has became a pretty plane with a whole lot of money tied up in her. Was it worth it yes, would we do it again not likely?? we have turned down 32,000.00 for N6596Q tempting your bet, however. Hubbie, would go out find another airplane and we would start all over again, I just smiled at the offer and told him "to keep the one he had." Audean Woollard N6596Q
