Matt--
Make sure you are using a STAINLESS steel brush. You can buy them
at
welding supply stores. They cost about $2 apiece for the small ones,
about the size of a large toothbrush. This is the size you want. It is
able to get into small places very well. You are right, steel wool
would be terrible. Never use it. Don't use a regular steel brush
either.
The yellow paint that you have is probably zinc chromate. If it
is
peeling it was put on poorly, without proper cleaning. I would try to
remove all of it before repainting. We found lots of black speckled
surface corrosion under my zinc chromate in my fuselage. Some dummy had
painted right over the top of it. Remember, zinc chromate (and
especially epoxy chromate) will prevent future corrosion pretty well,
but will not eliminate or even stop existing corrosion.
You asked about the oily sprays in your previous e-mail. They
don't
last much more than 2 years, and do make a mess. Boshield is a waxy
substance that is sprayed in, but it collects dust and dirt. I stay
away from sprays.Keep me posted in your progreess, Syd Cohen 1946 Ercoupe NC94196
