The speed of an ercoupe/alon is relatively the same. If you are trying to go 100 miles or more away from home, the speed will be less than 100mph because of a headwind. If you stick around the patch, the wind will be blowing at 25 knots at 3000-6000 feet in the direction you went last week, or plan to go next week. My alon 90 hp almost always travels distances at one of these speeds: 87, 98, 105. Occasionally faster or slower, but I can flight-plan at 95 and usually be pretty close. At 4500 feet speed feels irrelevent even though you might like to go faster. The real trade-off is cost. At 5 gal per hour we can average 90 knots or so. A faster plane, like at 130knots, will consume twice as much fuel. The coupe is more fun than than fast, which is why we fly them. Ken Doyle Springfield, Mo Alon N5477E
