Alberto E. Cidale, and others.

The speed of an ercoupe/alon is relatively the same. If you are trying to
go 100 miles or more
away from home, the speed will be less than 100mph because of a headwind.
If you stick around
the patch, the wind will be blowing at 25 knots at 3000-6000 feet in the
direction you went last
week, or plan to go next week. My alon 90 hp almost always travels
distances at one of these
speeds: 87, 98, 105. Occasionally faster or slower, but I can
flight-plan at 95 and usually be
pretty close. At 4500 feet speed feels irrelevent even though you might
like to go faster. The
real trade-off is cost. At 5 gal per hour we can average 90 knots or so.
A faster plane, like
at 130knots, will consume twice as much fuel. The coupe is more fun than
than fast, which is
why we fly them.
