>From memory I believe the baffels were optional but recommended on a 75
to 85 conversion for a 415C (but they may be required for a D?)

My 415C came with the 85HP upgrade but no baffles. Oil temp got very
near redline in the summer. I installed the baffles several years ago
(if you think they are merely expensive - wait till you see how hard
they are to install!) and also installed a El Reno oil filter. Now I
have trouble getting my oil above 170F if the weather is below 60F (I
use the blocking plate until temps are over 60). The baffles seem to
really make a difference. You need to look through the Univair type
certificate info On my copy of the type certificate for the 415C/CD
under Engines and Accessories states "111. Baffle plate, Erco P/N
415-40252 (optional with all engines)"

        I have a '46 415C converted to a 'D' with a C-75-12F converted
to a
C-85-12F. The aircraft has the skyport nose bowl installed and
additionally has the optional oil cooler installed per
memorandum 20. The
aircraft has a McCauley 1CM90 (I left the specification at work
so not
sure of the propeller number but it is the McCauley listed as
#4,5 or 6 of
        the specs.
Univair specification A-787 for the 415D model, note 4.b,
states that the
C-85 engine can be installed with the McCauley propeller if it
also has
additional baffling installed that cools the oil sump,
speciffically part
        no. 415-40486, 40485, 40487L, 40487R and 40488 and one baffle
that I can't
        locate in the parts manual.
Now the problem. My coupe does not have any of the baffling
installed as
noted above and required by the Specification and I can't seem
to find
        anything that authorizes their removal.
The previous owner when asked stated that the oil temperature
was well
within the green band even during a circumnavigation of the U.S.
that took
3 weeks during the month of August.
        Questions:
        1. Does the STC for the skyport nosebowl remove the baffling?
        2. Does anyone operate with the oil sump baffling installed on
their C-85?
        3. If you do have the baffling, what are your oil temperatures
during warm
        days and climbing to altitude?
        4. Does anyone have a reference that removes the baffling for
the oil
        tank?
The replacement cost for the six pieces that makes up the
baffling is
in excess of $550.00 from Univair. If it turns out that it is
really
required does anyone have a set of used baffling for sale or for
Loan so
that I could use it as a pattern. I'm good at sheet metal work
so it won't
be much of a chore to make.
