I have a '46 415C converted to a 'D' with a C-75-12F converted to a
C-85-12F. The aircraft has the skyport nose bowl installed and
additionally has the optional oil cooler installed per memorandum 20.
The
aircraft has a McCauley 1CM90 (I left the specification at work so not
sure of the propeller number but it is the McCauley listed as #4,5 or 6 of
the specs.
Univair specification A-787 for the 415D model, note 4.b, states that the
C-85 engine can be installed with the McCauley propeller if it also has
additional baffling installed that cools the oil sump, speciffically part
no. 415-40486, 40485, 40487L, 40487R and 40488 and one baffle that I can't
locate in the parts manual.
Now the problem. My coupe does not have any of the baffling installed as
noted above and required by the Specification and I can't seem to find
anything that authorizes their removal.
The previous owner when asked stated that the oil temperature was well
within the green band even during a circumnavigation of the U.S. that took
3 weeks during the month of August.
Questions:
1. Does the STC for the skyport nosebowl remove the baffling?
2. Does anyone operate with the oil sump baffling installed on their
C-85?
3. If you do have the baffling, what are your oil temperatures during
warm
days and climbing to altitude?
4. Does anyone have a reference that removes the baffling for the oil
tank?
The replacement cost for the six pieces that makes up the baffling is
in excess of $550.00 from Univair. If it turns out that it is really
required does anyone have a set of used baffling for sale or for Loan so
that I could use it as a pattern. I'm good at sheet metal work so it
won't
be much of a chore to make.
