A funny thing happened on the way to the forum. While driving home this evening from work I was thinking about the message I had sent and it struck me that if the AP/AI who had done all the work on the coupe for the 8 years that it sat in a hanger before I bought it hadn't finished anything he started, what was the chance that he just forgot to replace the baffles. I drove the 40 miles to the airport in Folkston, Ga, found the hanger owner and we went and looked and guess what I found stuffed in a cardboard box under a workbench. All of the baffles missing as well as the Ercoupe sign missing from the right hand cowl. For all of those who responded, thanks and the concensus is that they are definately needed. And As David said in his message what a job it's going to be to install them.. At least I can do it when I remove the engine.
