Hello Coupers Just thought that I would share with you that I have finally gotten a chance to fly N93966 after 1) a fuel leak grounded us and 2) the airport was torn up for taxiway and runway repairs. Such a good feeling to "BREAK the surly bonds". I had forgotten how much of a creampuff this airplane is to fly. As is my dubious custom after a hiatus from flying, I set myself up for final approach *way* to high. After lurking on the list and reading about landing too fast, etc, I elected to go power off and see where I ended up. Either I would make an accepatable landing after using up a bit of real estate, or I would go around. As I suspected, she bled off that excess altitude, even without s-turning, while I held her at 80 mph. Rounded out and flaired and touched down at between 65 and 70. What fun! The only black cloud to the morning, and it is a significant one, is that I felt as though the engine (C-85) was beginning to run rough about midway through the 1 hour flight. Carb head had no effect, mags checked ok. There was no perceptable RPM drop, just felt as though she was running rough. Maybe its just me. In any event, I plan to take an A&P friend up soon and see what he thinks. I has been a bit humid here of late, and I am wondering if I may be dealing with come condensation here in the fuel. Didn't see anything on preflight, but who knows? The wing tanks were 1/3rd full on each side. I have since topped them off as a precaution.
By the way, those of you who were interested in how we got the fuel
smell out of the carpet, etc. We used K2R spot remover to soak up the
spilled fuel in the floorboards, and then had the carpet drycleaned.
Now it smells real puurrdy! Kinda nice not to have my wife telling me
that I stink after I fly! Better than being told that I stink *while* I
fly I guess!!
Regards,
Jeff Orear
