Here's a builder-modifier's rule of thumb I was told once:

        Only change one major component at a time.

        If you want to test a new engine, do it on a well tested airframe.

        If you want to test airframe modifications or new technology,
                have a well tested engine so you don't have that to worry
about.

I'm a vanilla kind of guy.  I like something exotic but I wouldn't want
to be a test pilot unless it were in a planned program and I were better
trained than I am.
