As a Amateur radio operator for the past 30 years I have found that one of
the major sources of poor signal transmission, reception and generation of
"Hash" while transmitting is usually a poor, loose or corroded antenna
connection. Most aircraft antenna's are sealed in a plastic material and
if water is introduced into the base, corrosion usually occurs. Water
intrusion is generally through cracks or a missing cap on the antenna if
it
is of the type that is shortened by winding it around a fiberglass rod and
encapsulated. The generated hash is pretty nasty in interfering with
other
pieces of electronic equipment.
