I just want to point out, in regards to this discussion, that there are more alternative for our colleague who wants to fly.
Besides the Ercoupe option, there are a number of others. The site: http://www.dsg.cs.tcd.ie/dsg_people/sloubtin/IWA.html is a good resource. While the coupe is great, having no pedals, the organization whose site is listed above has all kinds of other solutions for those who walk on wheels or with the help of sticks. Some of these may be better for someone who needs to rent, or someone who needs a larger aircraft, or someone for whom the lack of a door presents an obstacle, or even someone who just wants or needs a bit more 'oomph' than the Ercoupe offers.
