After reviewing the large number of e-mail messages this past weekend I would like to make a few comments regarding the content of the Coupers mail list.
First, I think this an excellent place for newcomers to get answers to questions that may be bugging them. I would hate to see free dialog discouraged for fear of criticism. I think many of the topics are very relevant and should be discussed. For example the latest stream of messages on water, speeds to fly, etc. I do think that our responses should be carefully thought out and as technically accurate as possible. As for those reading them, I would certainly weigh the points carefully and discuss with others before drawing hard conclusions. Having been a pilot for over 40 years and an active CFI, I have seen a lot of misinformation disseminated through all forms of media. I think the Ercoupe is an excellent airplane and great fun to fly and a safe airplane, if maintained and flown properly. I certainly derive a great deal of pleasure in my Forney and I feel it is one of the best airplanes I have owned. One final comment regarding water. Water in a fuel system of an airplane is a potentially dangerous condition regardless of the type of airplane one flies. Draining fuel on the tarmac or grass does not tell you whether water may be present or not. Someone pointed out that the Fuel Tester sold by many FBOs is the best device for sampling fuel. I agree since water globules are immediately evident. I would also encourage pilots to take more than just one small sample. My experience has been that the first sample may look good but a second or third may reveal the presence of water. If you detect any trace of water, keep draining until you are sure it is all out and then drain some more. Go back the next day and do it again. You cannot be to careful. My personal opinion (and observation) is that many pilots (not just Coupe types) are far to casual about checking their fuel supply for water. The FAA has an advisory circular out on the subject that is worth reading (AC 20-125). I believe advisory circulars can be downloaded from the AOPA's web site. Keep the messages coming and the Coupes flying! My hat is off to Tom Laird- McConnell for starting this forum! Regards Charles McKinnie N3050G
