Howdy, Jack.
When I hooked up with 29H, I tried to turn her off with mixture, like I
did 59F (Cessna 150).  No deal.  That C-85 didn't even run much slower.

Now, I don't like mag shut offs because fuel left in a cylander can fire
if a P-lead breaks, etc.  So I cut the header-tank to carborator off as
I taxi in.  Takes talent to judge so you don't run out of momentum short
of your parking spot, the gas pumps, etc.  

Mixture is used to lean above 5,000 feet, though.  Since I got home to
the Willamette Valley, I haven't been up that high.  Standard leaning
technique is to watch the tachometer.  Provided you are up where your
engine is too rich, RPM should increase until it is "just right," then
drop.  You should adjust to just a bit rich of "just right."  Improper
leaning technique can burn holes in tops of pistions.  Just ask 59F.
