----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----David,
The short story is that the original, factory supplied right hand exhaust
stacks on the Alons were prone to cracking. Alon came up with an improved
stack with a different part number, but I have never seen any evidence that
they were actually available for purchase.
My right hand exhaust stack was rewelded about 12 times in the 1800 hours
that it was in service. I replaced both of my stacks with rebuilt units from
Dawley Aviation. Dawley will take your old stacks and make them better than
new. They do a much better job than the originals. The area that my old
stacks always cracked in is much stronger looking on the stacks from Dawley.
I also have the flexible rubber straps between the lower end of the stacks
and the engine mount. My airplane came from the factory with this
arrangement, I believe. These are just there to dampen vibrations. I don't
have too many hours on these new stacks (maybe 100 or so) but I think they
will stand up much better than the originals.
Hope this helps some.
