I found it interesting that the technique of putting your hand on the wing
root to lose altitude quickly was mentioned. This was demonstrated to
me the first time I checked out in a Coupe in the mid 50's and I use it
regularly. I am much more comfortable with this method than that of
slowing the plane up till it mushes then hoping you allowed enough room
to recover.

I was taught to land by pulling the power abeam of the numbers and
adjusting
the rest of the approach in order to touch down on the numbers only adding
a "clearing" blip of power on base. My last plane was a Champ so I would
turn base early and wind up high on final. A nice slip on final which
would
both take care of the extra altitude and any cross wind and I could make a
somewhat credible landing.

I can approximate this in the Coupe by putting the hand out on the wing
root.
However I have mentioned this to others only to be met with looks of
horror
and inquiries into my sanity. <G>

Now I can come out of the closet. Look guys I can "SLIP" MY COUPE!! <G>

I wonder how many other Coupers out there use this to get rid of extra
altitude? If there are two of you and you both put your hands out you
really can come down fast. However you have to be sure that the guy in the
right
seat will pull his hand in when you holler "Flaps up" <G>

There is a downside to this, a lot of turbulence is created in the cockpit
and any
loose charts, paper towels, etc have a tendency to depart the aircraft
littering
the final approach.
