Jerry Eichenberger taught me 'Ercoupe flaps' on my first hour of check-out
in N2906H.

After I got her home, I took an AN2 owner (who learned in an Ercoupe in
the
early 60's) for a sentimental ride, and he right away asked me if I knew
about
'Ercoupe flaps.' So I'd say that the technique has practically ended up in
the
POH by now.

Yes, a lot of the uninitiated don't seem to understand it, but remember
that MOST
private pilots have NEVER flown without doors and windows firmly locked in
place. They have no concept of just how much an arm (or an arm with a
leather
jacket sleeve on it) creates drag when extended. The very idea just makes
no
sense to them. So when you suggest that they use a body part as
air-brakes,
they don't quite compute it.

When ending up a bit high on final with a 'Coupe initiate, I've
occasionally said,
'put your arm out like this' only to be met with a chuckle. I've ended up
saying
'I MEAN IT, DO IT!' to get them to give it a shot.

And the response, as we start to plummet earthward is 'Wow, that makes a
major difference!'

Funny, I never have trouble convincing the right-seat pilot to 'okay, pull

'em in!'
Is it the rate at which the trees start getting bigger that keeps them
alert?
