To those who care about these things, My friend Gary Tuovinen and
myself are preparing the Aircoupe for another transcontinental record
attempt as sanctioned by the NAA & FAI. Last year we landed the C1-b
record for West to East,(with a twist) we didn't go the shortest
distance to claim the record, we went the longest. Which is what our
attempt this year is all about. Pt. Barrow AK is about as far north as
you're going to go. although Key West is considered the furthest
Southern airport, Hilo, HI is actually 280 SM south of the Key West
meridian.
We also are going to attempt a transcontinental record from East to
West.
The Itinerary looks like this:: May 16, 2001 Depart Salinas, CA
                                 May 20, 2001 Arrive Barrow
                                 May 23, 2001 Depart Barrow
May 29, 2001 Arrive Key West
May 31, 2001 Depart Key West
May 31, 2001 Arrive St. Augustine
June 1, 2001 Depart St. Augustine
June 1, 2001 Arrive Kitty Hawk
June 2, 2001 Depart Kitty Hawk
                                 June 6, 2001 Arrive Salinas.
That's about 110 Hrs on the Coupe in 22 days or 5 hours per day.

We have done some extensive work on the plane since last years run,
which, by the way is now official the C1-b West to East transcontinental
speed record is 52.46 mph, We are adding a 3 axis auto pilot, a fuel
consumption indicator, a second GPS, cylinder and oil tank heaters, a
graphic engine monitor, and two Gator Aid bottles to be used for pilot
relief.

Several people along the way have offered accommodations for which we
are forever grateful, and we have a gaggle of planes that are going to
escort us from Bettels AK through the "Gates of the Arctic" on to
Barrow.

Time is drawing ever so close, I hope the NAA Sanction paperwork arrives
soon.

We will have an Amateur "tracker" and web site set up and I will be
posting that site address as soon as we are sure it works.

More later
