Regarding the nose strut cable, I don't think normal landings are the only
issue there.  When you have a landing problem such as coming down hard on
the nose or porpoising, it will be more likely to break the very long
strut
off if it is fully extended.  I have had this kind of bad landing happen
and
you can find yourself hitting nose down at an angle you've probably never
seen in flight.  This is fairly common on the Ercoupe.  At least the front
end (engine mount, etc.) is super-strong and not likely to collapse.  It
will also be more likely for the strut to get bent and if it bends the
first
hit and can't go back up in there smoothly on the second, well, bye.Also
the
strut supposedly can fly right out if the scissors breaks or the scissors
bolt comes loose but I am not familiar enough with it to confirm this.  GW
