George, I agree that we could use new manufactured wings for our Ercoupes,
that would be a good solution to the on going spar problems. I think you
will find that composite wings would be very hard to make that would be
aerodynamically the same and that would directly attach to the current
center section of the Ercoupe. Second, composite structures do not like
prolonged exposure to sun light and many Ercoupe owners do not enjoy the
luxury of a hangar.

So what to do? It is possible to design (it has been done) a stressed skin
direct replacement set of wings for the Ercoupe that is all sheet metal
and
lighter than our current wings. They are the same profile and would just
bolt on with the same attachments. They look great and would be a big
improvement to old tired wings.

So why you might ask do we not have them?

They would sell for around $ 6,000 a set and that is a lot of money unless
you compare it to what Univar is asking for a new set today. The problem
is
that most owners will not spend about half what their Ercoupe is worth to
fix a problem that they like to think they do not have (denial in many
cases).

This will not change until that FAA issues a comprehensive AD that will
ground many Ercoupes and then people will want to purchase new wings.
Right
now it is a Catch - 22. We do not want to purchase the wings due to cost
and no one wants to build them until there is a market for them.

Watch the next few years for the rest of the story.

Best regards,
Vern
