It does not generally take a large number of accidents of this type to spawn an AD. Just one accident, or even the suspicion that one could occur, is all it takes. Look at the Piper wing struts or the Aeronca spars, both of which AD's could probably have been worked around. The FAA men take structural failure very seriously. I do not believe that this will amount much difficulty for most of the list members. I think this will mainly hit the more beaten down Ercoupe planes, which are not nearly as common as they were even 10 years ago. I must say that if these less cared-for planes to die off as a result of this, I am not sure it is something to be sad about. It would be more sad if someone gets killed because they did not maintain their aircraft. Hopefully the cost to inspect will be reasonable.
