I don't know a whole lot about instruments, but would suggest you
keep it fairly simple. The turn and bank indicator will tell you if you
are right side up when you accidenly fly into a cloud one day It will
allow you to make a fixed rate turn back from whence you came and
hopefully safty.
On the radio, don't waste money on a cheap radio. If you get in a
tight spot, you want clear, long range, communications. I've had good
and bad radios and a good one will make you happy when a cheapy will
only bring stress and little help when you really need it! My feeling is
that a good King or similar will bring you years of value for your
money. A good radio can be THE most valuable goodie in your panel.
