It's been my experience that there are some full VFR circumstances, especially cross country or at nght, when it's really great to have a horizon gyro! Even if someone doesn't aspire to an IFR ticket, they can practice and greatly improve their skills and confidence under the hood, which certainly contributes to safety. Of course, Artie is right. I forgot that I never flew 06H at night, whereas I do fly 387 at night. And when I do, in the dark patches over the countryside, I do refer to the attitude indicator quite a lot. Thanks for the reminder. If you're starting fresh, why not? Weight and expense. For some time, I've just used a King KX-100 GPS/Com handheld, with the yoke mount attached to the panel. The com radio sounds great to me, and the gps is easy to use, and can be updated via the web. I use an i-pac "PDA" as a cool color moving map on longer cross countrys. Which software, Artie? Teletype? GPSAnywhere?
