Dear Coupers, I feel the need to say something to you all. Perhaps I am being overly defensive, perhaps not. However, as one of the few females on this list, I want to make my position clear and say a few words in my defense.
I have been one of the people who occassionally sends jokes - and holiday greetings. This type of activity seems to be offensive to some. Even though I have called myself an idiot, I am not. I may be foolish and silly sometimes but I'm not stupid. I worked many years in the commercial printing industry where I encountered and solved technical as well as artistic problems. (Admittedly, I did not do well in my own business, but that's another story. My business failure did not have to do with my technical expertise.) When I returned to school, I initially did not intend to pursue a degree. I just wanted to take a few classes. I soon discovered, to my delight, that I am a very good student. In fact, I am a much better student than I was when I was younger. So I went on to receive my BS. I did quite well in almost all my classes and excelled in some. I even received some scholastic awards and scholarships along the way. I am now working on an MS and have finished everything except my thesis. I think that's not too shabby for someone who only finished the 10th grade and never got her GED. Usually, I am not one to tout my accomplishments. The only reason that I bring any of this up is to show that I understand the scientific method and how to use it. I understand how to use logic. I understand rigor and precision in problem solving. I am again working in printing. In my current job I have a lot of responsibilty. When it comes to certain technical matters, I'm the only one who can solve it. I'm not bragging. It's just the way it is. What I am saying is that I can be deadly serious when it's necessary and I also have the brains to do what needs to be done. But I also have a strong sense of humor and I don't like to be so "heavy" unless it is truly called for. I also belong to a discussion list that deals with the horrors of "managed care". Many of the participants on this list are doctors and lawyers. We discuss many matters that are literally life and death. There is an element of humor that appears now and then. For the most part the list members seem to enjoy the humor. The off-topic component gradually dies off on its own and doesn't seem to interfere with the purpose of the list -bottom line, to change the health care system. I am not saying that list is better. I am using it to illustrate that it is possible to stray outside the lines once in awhile without destroying the integrity of the list. Nevertheless, I respect the position of the folks who are offended by anything other than tech matters. So, in that spirit, I will not send any more humor or holiday greetings to the list. Instead, I will send those things individually to the people who are interested in receiving them. It probably is a good idea to have another list also. My primary interest in subscribing to this list was to find out as much about coupes as possible. From the beginning I was honest about my ignorance of planes and my, as yet, inability to fly. I am doing my best to learn as much as I can as fast as I can. In the process, I have met many wonderful people and acquired several friends. The social aspect is a welcome bonus I wasn't expecting. However, like I said, I promise to send no more non-technical questions to the list.
